Anjum Gupta

Professor Anju Gupta is the Director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic and teaches non-clinical courses in immigration law, refugee law, and professional responsibility at Rutgers Law School. She previously served as Vice Dean of the law school, as well as Associate Dean for Clinical Education. She is also a visiting professor at Columbia Law School. 

Professor Gupta’s scholarship focuses on immigration and refugee law, with a particular focus on gender-based claims for relief, and has been published in various law reviews, including theColumbia Human Rights Law Review, theMichigan Law Review Online, theGeorgetown Immigration Law Journal, theColorado Law Review, and theIndiana Law Journal. In 2017, Professor Gupta was awarded the Presidential Fellowship for Teaching Excellence in recognition of her teaching and scholarly accomplishments at Rutgers. In 2023, under her leadership, the Rutgers Law Clinical Program received the Rutgers Outstanding Service Award. In 2025, she was awarded the Legacy Award by the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey. She has served in national leadership roles, including as President of the Clinical Legal Education Association, the largest association of law professors nationwide.  

Professor Gupta clerked for the Honorable Chester J. Straub of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Honorable Charles P. Sifton of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Professor Gupta received her B.A. with high honors in psychology and women’s studies from the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor and her J.D. from Yale Law School. She joined the Board of The Fund for New Jersey in 2024.
